  5. than lead. Barium is used in medicine in the
  6. form of barium sulphate, which is taken in
  7. solution (a `barium meal') and its progress
  8. followed, using X-rays, to reveal
  9. abnormalities of the digestive tract. The
  10. name comes from the Greek word for `heavy',
  11. since barium was first discovered in barytes
  12. or heavy spar. Barium, with strontium, forms
  13. the emissive surface in cathode-ray tubes.
