A metallic chemical element, symbol
Ba, atomic number 56, relative atomic mass
137.36. It is silver-white in colour,
oxidizes very easily, and is a little harder
than lead. Barium is used in medicine in the
form of barium sulphate, which is taken in
solution (a `barium meal') and its progress
followed, using X-rays, to reveal
abnormalities of the digestive tract. The
name comes from the Greek word for `heavy',
since barium was first discovered in barytes
or heavy spar. Barium, with strontium, forms
the emissive surface in cathode-ray tubes.
